LEARNING & LISTENING WORLDWIDE
Hi everyone!
Jazz harp gets more and more of a widespread phenomenon. And not in the least with the help of today's online learning ànd performing possibilities.
In this newsletter, we'd like to share a brand new series of
Kurt's Corner @ Jazzharp .org online lessons on improvising. Further 'virtual tips' include Deborah Henson-Conant's upcoming 5,5 hour marathon livestream benefit concert for Parkinson's disease research.
Speaking of worldwide: in real life, you can go and see Park Stickney in
Asia, Deborah Henson-Conant, Park Stickney and Carol Robbins in the USA, and Edmar Castaneda in Europe (including a free workshop at the Pro Arte Belgium 25th Birthday celebrations!).

Last but not least, the Jazz Harp Foundation's US representative
Trista Hill is inciting and hosting a discussion on jazz and the role of the harp in jazz, inspired on the article 'The time is right for jazz harp', an article Loes van Schaijk wrote for the IJHF at the time of the 2010 Jazz Harp Academy.
LEARNING
ONLINE: KURT'S CORNER
Less-than-7-minutes-online-jazzharp-lessons premiered last week
We had loads of fun watching the Edinburgh Harpfestival goers swing it underneath their headphones, connected to both our iPad and an Electroharp (courtesy of Camac / Vining Harps). See our Facebook album EIHF:).
Every day we launched another iPad lesson, right at our festival booth, in a series of five lessons by Kurt Schwab.
Now, you can take the lessons at home! All for free (for a possibly limited amount of time:). It starts out with some chord explanation and simple patterns, adding more variations and lots of playing with our rhythm section as we go along. By the end of lesson five you will have had an introduction to the use of the 6th chord to form improvisational patterns and so-called 'vertical improvisation', and you will be able to improvise on the full form of the song 'My Blue Heaven'!

ONLINE: DEBORAH HENSON-CONANT MARATHON LIVE STREAM CONCERT
5.5 hour (!) concert for Parkinson'S Disease research
Monday, April 21, 9.30am EDT / 13:30 GMT+1

"Sometimes, it’s a challenge to know how to make a meaningful contribution to a situation, especially when we don't fit the mold. That's when we have to get creative. I run nearly every day and I would love to be able to run alongside my husband to support his mother [diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, red.] in this race. But I'm just not that fast. So I'm 'running' my own marathon that still lets me end with him, lets me raise money for the same cause and lasts the same amount of time it would take me to actually run the marathon course."
Go here for more info on the project and how you can contribute.
Go to
Concert Window ticket site and get your pay-what-you-want ticket (from $1 on up) to this true Marathon benefit performance. Every penny you pay (and throw in the virtual tip jar) will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease research.

ONLINE DISCUSSION
ONLINE: TALKBACK WITH TRISTA
What is Jazz Harp?
Greetings one and all with hands on a harp! We’re pretty sure you’ve been asked - or more than likely asked yourself - What exactly IS jazz harp? In this space we’ll discuss where jazz and the harp intersect and where they don’t - yet. It’s an open discussion and we so value your opinion! After reading the following (approximately 1.5 minutes of your time), join Jazz Harp Academy Facebook group to sound off and listen in. Ready?

Three years ago we commissioned researcher Loes van Schaijk to pull together both concrete and semi-fuzzy information about jazz and the harp. You may have actually been contacted to participate and then quoted. Here is one sample from that comprehensive paper.

“...the whole idea of jazz is that it is not a fixed concept. Therefore, people who want to learn to play it will only find it if they keep searching, experimenting, improvising. A song or even an arrangement is never in itself a "jazz song"; it is the performer who makes it jazz. Many songs from Realbooks that are known as "jazz standards" are actually showtunes from Broadway musicals and movies that were well-known and therefore suited for adaptation and improvisation when jamming with other musicians. Someone is a jazz composer or arranger not when he is writing the music, but if he succeeds in making the performer understand his music in such a way that he will play it as jazz.” (p.7 of The Time is Right for Jazz Harp).
What do you think? Do you agree or disagree about what makes someone a jazz player or composer, and/or what makes an arrangement “jazz"?
We want to hear from you -
