WORLD HARP CONGRESS

WHClogoAMS From July 17 until July 23, 2008, the 10th World Harp Congress took place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The iJHF took this chance to, after 1 year of existence, establish its name in the international harp world more firmly. And it did so succesfully, with the help of some of our most valued jazz harpists and board members, and the cooperation of several manufacturers. As you can see on our website, some of them joined us as a sponsor now, and help us to be able to do this work.

To be able to rent our stand, and to promote jazz harpists around the globe, we sold many jazz harp cd's AND our own 'I love jazzharp' t-shirts! We still have some shirts and cd's left, which will be sold at jazzharp.org, so keep an eye on the setup of our store there... read more

...AND A MACHO HARP!

clipvolkskrant
One of the top moments for jazz harp during the World Harp Congress this Summer, was the publication of a review in the 'Volkskrant', one of the most important Dutch national newspapers, especially for arts & culture. It's a must read, especially for fans of Maeve Gilchrist and Edmar Castaneda (and we hope we have made fans out of you with our 'spotlight on' items of the past two newsletters).
Read our English translation of the article at http://www.jazzharp.org/lib_art_10waa_volkskrantwhcreview.html

JAZZ HARP HEROES
The two jazz harp heroes highlighted in this review are Maeve Gilchrist and Edmar Castaneda, both suggested for programming at the World Harp Congress by the iJHF.
We already did a spotlight on interview with Maeve in our April 2008 newsletter. Edmar was highligted in our July 2008 newsletter, and an interview with him will be published in the next issue!

WIN THE DOROTHY ASHBY SCHOLARSHIP!

dorothyashby

In 2009, the iJHF intends to award the first
Dorothy Ashby Scholarship!
The jury will, amongst others, exist of jazz harpist and Ashby's former student Carol Robbins (chair), and bass player Pat Senatore, who was one of her band members.
Candidates are requested to submit their own personal study plan along with a video tape. They will be judged based on motivation, playing, and the study plan.
Write an email to info@jazzharp.org with 'Dorothy Ashby Scholarship' in the subject field to receive further info on how to compete.

Read more about Dorothy Ashby on her jazzharp.org bio page, and do check out the podcast that is linked there!

GLOBAL EDUCATION RESEARCH

surveyimage The iJHF is currently conducting a worldwide survey on jazz harp education possibilities. Board of Affiliate members from around the globe are working with us to get an overview that will provide information to jazz harp students and teachers (to be). Based on this overview, the iJHF will then be able to more constructively help in advancing education possibilities. We could still use some affiliates to help gathering information in several parts of the world. Want to contribute? Write an email to info@jazzharp.org, or apply to the Board of Affiliates right away.

VACANCY AT IJHF: FUNDRAISING ASSISTANT

The iJHF is looking for a fundraising assistant.
Currently all contributions to the Foundation are on a volunteer basis. However, the fundraising position could be awarded with a percentage of certain revenues.

LORI ANDREWS ON HER WAY TO A GRAMMY NOMINATION?

lori After Deborah Henson-Conant's Grammy nomination of last year, now jazz harpist Lori Andrews has a chance to be on the nomination list! Her 8th and newest cd After hours is on the Grammy Nomination Roster 'Best Contemporary Jazz Album', meaning it could earn a place on the nomination list if it gets enough professional votes.
Lori is renowned for her unique style of playing, her performances are highly energetic and bring the harp to the forefront of the jazz idiom in a musically sound and very contagious way. One of the techniques she created for the harp is the ‘slap-bass’ technique in which she slaps the bass in a percussive way while playing the bass notes.

To learn more about Lori, read this article from the March 08 issue of ‘International Musician’ (official journal of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada). Also interesting is the interview published in the monthly jazzreview.com newsletter by Norm Breest.
And, last but not least, her biography on our website and these YouTube movies:

WHO PLAYED 'SAINT LOUIS WOMAN' IN 'FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE'?

We regularly get questions from our website visitors. Very often, we know the answer... but sometimes even we are in the dark.
So, here is a call to you! If you know the answer to this question or if you know where to look, please let us know, at info@jazzharp.org:

Greetings,
There is a jazz harp rendition of "Saint Louis Woman" (supposedly played by Clifton Webb) in the American movie" For Heaven's Sake". Do you know who played this and can a copy of it be found on CD? It is wonderful!
Phil Sampley
Indianapolis, IN
USA

Of course we'll keep you all posted and publish the answer in the next issue of our newsletter.

spotlight on: CHRISTINE LUTZ

In this ‘spotlight on’ we’d like to present to you:

Christine Lutz

About a year ago, we stumbled upon a cd of 'Harpiswing', and were surprised by its harpist, Christine Lutz.
Now, our Board of Affiliates member Hadrien Caron from Paris, has submitted this very complete and interesting interview with Christine. We hope you'll enjoy it as much as we did. Hadrien, many thanks to you!

‘FREEDOM !!!’

Christine Lutz studied piano, solfège, harp, harmony, bass guitar, and double bass...

Still, today she says: For now, I belong only to the harp.
Read here why, and how she became a jazz harpist.

‘Sometimes it leads to very brutal

pedal action, but I don't mind it

that much'

Christine's 'DUO harpe contrebasse' was featured in October in Arles at the Journées de la Harpe. Keep checking our calendar for future performance dates.

Also, listen to this sound sample, it's great fun! You can buy the Harpiswing CD at www.harpiswing.com.

GADGETS!

This is such a great gadget, we're just going to repeat it:

We found a great tool for those of you who, like us, still like to write music by hand every now and then.
It prints blank sheet music in any format you want. Just select number of staves, size, barlines, clefs, flats and sharps, time signature, etc., or just single all empty staves, and then just hit the print button. All free and without any signing up!
www.blanksheetmusic.net, or click the banner below.

And yes, we know you can also use your Sibelius or Finale to print staves, but this is really way quicker and easier, and it can be done from any computer with an internet connection!

YOUTUBE TIPS

This time, we want to point out 2 movies of Rossitza Milevska, who will be our next Spotlight On artist.
