IT'S WORKING!!

Our latest accomplishment: we are being noticed by jazz critics. A recent cd review on jazz.com started out like this:

Jazz harp is not as rare as you might think. There is an International Jazz Harp Foundation and on their website, you can read biographies of jazz harpists of the past, including Adele Girard, Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane, as well as current jazz harpists like Edmar Castaneda... read on

INTRODUCING THE NEW IJHF TREASURER...

Hi everyone,

"Vacancy for Treasurer for the international Jazz Harp Foundation" is what caught my eye some time ago. Not being a harpist myself, I pondered some time whether or not to apply for this position.

peter

When I met my wife some four years ago I fell in love with both her and her instrument. It was a one package deal anyhow...
From that point on I have directed my attention towards both the music and the market. I have noticed the world of harp is at the break of a new era, with new techniques, different styles and different harpists. Wouldn´t it be great to be a part of this change, this renaissance of harp music?

I decided to apply and in August I was able to accept my responsibility as treasurer of the Foundation. My function will be to secure the foundation's financial position so that we can keep informing you on the evolving world of jazz harp, organize events, masterclasses, scholarships and link harpists all over the world.

If you want to know more about me you can check my bio at jazzharp.org - board of directors. You can reach me by email at peter@jazzharp.org

RITE OF STRINGS @ NORTH SEA JAZZ!

No less than three harpists were to be heard at the 34th edition of the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, thus giving the harp a central position at this evening called 'Rite of Strings'.

To those visitors who were cool enough to immerge themselves with harp, our instrument will no longer only be associated with fairy sounds. There was mainstream jazz with the Edmar Castaneda Quartet, avant-garde soundscapes from Zeena Parkins and Ikue Mori, and modern acoustic jazz from the Norwegian Iro Haarla and her quintet. read on

DUTCH STUDENTS MEET EDMAR

clinicedmarcapelle- by Rosanne van Bodegom, iJHF affiliate

....After hearing a couple of his compositions there was the opportunity to ask questions. Edmar explained how his compositions are built. While he did so he played the parts. Most of his songs have an A-B-A’-B’-… form. A and B are certain motives he plays and where he improvises on in the A’ and B’ parts. Then in between there can be interludes or so called bridges in which the whole style of a song can change temporarily. He also spoke of the number one improvisation rule: “There are no mistakes!”... read on

spotlight on: EVELYN HUBER

In this 'spotlight on' we'd like to present to you:

Evelyn Huber

Evelyn is an incredibly versatile and highly skillful harpist from Germany. She plays jazz, but also world music and classical at a high level and with some truly great ensembles.

She is a thoroughly trained musician: I never found the least bit of doubt in her playing, both live and recorded. Still, no rigidity or seriousness: she always plays with a smile.

evelyn

Evelyn has a very extensive tour schedule, so if you're living anywhere near Germany or Austria, you should be able to catch one of her performances soon.

She has quite a few nice CDs out, of which the very popular Tango Lyrico (with saxophone player Mulo Francel) deserves special mention, having received the German record industries Jazz Award in 2006.
She is a harp teacher at the Munich School of Music and a guest teacher at the Guildhall School of Music in London, UK.

Listen here...

We'll promise you an interview with Evelyn in our next newsletter. By then, her CDs will probably be available through the jazzharp.org webshop. For now, order them at www.evelynhuber.de, amazon.com, or try your local harp store.

GADGETS!

chordfinder

CHORD FINDER

Find any chord or scale you need in the 'piano room' at www.looknohands.com.
This is a very helpful tool. Most chord finders are for guitar but this one is especially for the piano and great for us harpists too.
Select your chord or scale and in a split second you get the note names, intervals, position on the piano keyboard and a sound sample.
